About Me

My photo
Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

Planting Potatoes

Ok so I am no expert, but at least I have some idea of where potatoes come from and how they grow.  So when given the opportunity to spread the knowledge and encourage the inner city younger generation to get their hands dirty, I was all for it.

Western Potato Inc. contacted a number of schools in W.A. about growing potatoes.  There is an increasing push for children to be involved in growing food. It is not only a great idea to get them involved in caring about nutrition and where food comes from it also gives them an understanding of how valuable farmers are.

To quote one of my youngsters as she dug up the dirt and prepared the soil, "Oh this is too hard, I'd rather go to the supermarket and buy them (potatoes) there".

A perfect opportunity for me to point to the work of our farmers who often labour in extreme conditions.
