"Lynda I've just got home; do you still want to go this evening?"
"Eh...well, where was it again and what was it?"
So around 7.10pm I reached my destination and joined my friend for an evening with Sabrina Hahn and her co-presenter who told the attentive audience how we should be and could be changing our Perth sands into something that resembles soil. It all seemed to make so much sense to us, but then again most of the audience were already interested in gardens and how to make the best of them in our extreme summer conditions.
On the negative were mentioned the modern trend to plant minimalist gardens with few if any trees, the growing use of artificial lawns, together with our tendency to build our homes with black tiled roofs and no eaves and the lack of consideration given to orientation in order to make the best of our climate.
To redress the balance the two amusing and knowledgeable speakers talked about the advantages that planting the right trees and shrubs provide for the average home owner; the way to turn sand into soil and how the time and money spent properly preparing vegie and flower beds would be amply repaid by the produce produced and the benefits to both our climate and the health of our natural environment.
It was obvious that the duo made a great impression on the mainly feminine audience which had struck me as a little strange knowing as I do that many of the keenest gardeners are male that was until I found out that the audience were mainly members of Soroptimists International; a female organisation that raises awareness of women's issues around the globe.
