About Me

Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

New Year's Day - Leeuwin II

Everything closed. It could have been a quiet, uneventful day, but for a trip out on the sailing ship, Leeuwin II, which had some of us imagining what Australian colonial seafarers must have experienced.

The ship, which is celebrating its 25th birthday, was specifically built as an adventure ship for youths between 16 and 25. The late afternoon/evening sail that we undertook saw the young, "Redshirts" as the bona fide crew referred to them, hauling sails up and down, stowing ropes and demonstrating the correct way to don life jackets as well as serving platters of tucker to we hungry passengers.

Most of us soon found our sea legs, though for others the three hour sail, was three hours too long as they found the ocean swell just a bit too much for sensitive stomachs. We were encouraged to tour the ship, make our own drinks even have a go at steering the ship.

The late afternoon sun followed us back to shore.
