Power lines down?
Our first real taste of Winter, almost a month late at that and what happens we get widespread blackouts throughout the metro area. Apparently earlier today there were over 34 000 homes without power. Now only around 10 000. Yes and you guessed it I am one of them.
Ho hum typical of W A at this time of the year.
Most of Western Australia receives it electricity via overhead power lines perched on wooden poles. Unfortunately during Winter we, likes thousands of places all over the world, are subject to wild storms that not only bring much needed rain but also high winds. It is the winds that seem to cause most of the problem, stripping trees of their branches and ripping roofs off buildings. This debris is whipped around and destroys the lines or the poles they are sitting on. Hence the yearly blackouts.
It is pretty frustrating sitting here in the dark, but at least I have a gas stove which means I can still eat dinner and boil water for a hot drink. AND I am indoors, not outside trying to fix electric power lines on a dark, cold, wet and windy night.
