Applecross, a leafy suburb adjacent to where I live, is where a good friend and I decided to have lunch. A birthday is always worth celebrating and an excellent excuse for a relaxed meal with a glass of vino.
The calamari was lightly floured then deep fried. It tasted great and made an ideal late lunch.
Though missing a main ingredient, the smoked salmon Caesar Salad, was said to be equally delicious and would be ordered again even though it was served minus the anchovies .
The Grizzle: This is not about the food, service or anything else to do with the restaurant. It is in fact more to do with a lack of facilities.
No, I am not talking about 'Loos', or anything else so mundane. It is the lack of the small, intimate wine or tapas bar. Applecross, teams with restaurants of many types, and even boasts a pub or two. What it lacks is a place where a glass of wine can be purchased without the necessity of buying a meal. I have been told that this type of licence is almost impossible to obtain and yet for people such as myself it would be an ideal meeting place.
This lack has already been recognised by our State Government, but it seems local councils do not agree, with those sentiments. Whatever the reason, small intimate places similar to those that populate other Australian cities are sadly missing in our metropolis.
