About Me

My photo
Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

George Street, Fremantle

Running parallel to the river is George Street in East Fremantle. It has an old world quality that is reminiscent of some Melbourne Streets. Unlike most of Perth, Fremantle has retained many of its original buildings and whilst by European standards they are not old, for Western Australia they are.

George Street, or rather a couple of the shops that inhabit it, was the topic of conversation a few days ago. Intrigued I decided to have a look and was captivated by what I saw.

First we had a coffee from an award winning coffee shop. The brick wall at the back of the small cafe and corrugated metal ceiling were charming. According to a plaque, the owners had been recognised for renovations that maintained the integrity of the building.Across the road we found a wine cellar with a difference. It was a treasure trove of gift ware with an emphasis on wine products and related paraphernalia.Up the road was a gourmet's delight with spices and foods from all over the world. Yum.

A mix of quaint residential and commercial properties filled the remainder of the street with a number of buildings in the process of receiving face lifts in keeping with the existing architecture.
