About Me

Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

Penguin Island

Well it seems to be true. Blogging is ADDICTIVE. I had such a glorious day yesterday, I just had to share it, hence my new Blog.

Boxing Day is always a bit tricky. Do you stay home and finish up the leftovers or do you take a chance and head out to join the throng of people looking for something to do. Well my son, Rob, Susi and I chose the latter and headed out to, Penguin Island, a place mentioned in most tourist handouts.

40 Kms south of Perth, in the shire of Rockingham, it is a small island renown for its colony of, you guessed it; Penguins. Not that we saw very many and to be honest if it had not been for some visitors from Vietnam, we may well have missed those hiding beneath a boardwalk.

The island is a few hundred meters off shore and a ferry runs hourly taking boat loads of tourists across the short stretch of shallow water. Having said that, many hardier souls, such as ourselves, wade across using a convenient sandbank. For my 6ft son, it was a breeze, but for vertically challenged Susi and I not quite so easy. We pushed our way through the warm water while the waves lapped higher and higher, up to our backpacks, which we endeavoured to keep dry. Still it was great fun and well worth the effort.

The Grizzle: The sign posting was appalling - we found one and then they disappeared and we were left wondering whether to turn left or right. For a high profile destination, it was pretty annoying and dare I say it embarrassing. After all my son and Susi are visitors to WA.
