About Me

Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

"Rock Clock"

I've just heard this phrase used by a recent relocated journalist who previously lived in Melbourne ........."Rock Clock".  It refers to the fact that Perth's mining links have led to a cultural change in the lifestyle of many people who live here.  The fact that miners and those related to the industry work 12 hour shifts means early to bed and early to rise....I guess it makes them wealthy (not convinced on the wise).

This not only affects the mining sector, but also has a run on affect on tradies and many ancillary industries who now run their businesses on the same clock; i.e. they begin early and close down even earlier.  Now this is great for those industries, but for the many of us who are in no way linked to the industry and would like to socialise after 9.00pm in the evening it is not so good.  It is almost imposible to find any restaurant kitchen open past 9.00pm on a weekday and even weekends are problematic.

Being asked to leave a restaurant at 10.00pm on a Friday evening still rankles.  It's is no wonder tourism is down and the international fraternity choose to ignore us.
