Having recently visited the, "Painted Fish" a cottage over 100 years old, lovingly restored and retrofitted with numerous sustainable features, it is with dismay I look around at the large new houses springing up all over Perth.

The sizes alone are often quite obscene, being huge blocks of rendered concrete taking up the entire site, with hardly any room left for a garden. Worse still they pay little attention to the climate. The older buildings always had huge verandas or large eaves to shelter the outer walls from the fierce summer sun. The eave-less style, totally unsuited to Perth's climate is all the rage. Cooling is achieved by large, energy guzzling air-conditioning units which often run 24/7 in the summer and almost as long in the winter. Insulation is now compulsory in the roof, though it is still rare to hear of it used in the cavity walls. Even double glazing, long recognised as a must for extreme weather conditions has only just begun to make an appearance here.
