About Me

My photo
Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

Snaps of the City

Perth city skyline is modest in comparison with most cities I have visited. It seemed set to get a new lease of life just three months ago. But as everyone has heard, we and the rest of the world are now in for the daddy of all recessions.........so updating the skyline appears to be on hold.

After walking over the top of the railway station I headed towards the central city area.

Pedestrian shopping malls criss-cross the city.

The Grizzle: Something I have grizzled about for years now is the lack of imagination that seems to have dogged Perth's architecture. We must have some of the most boring modern buildings around, The Convention Centre, which occupies prime river foreshore land, being number one on my hit list.

Generally Perth people are, for some reason I have not yet fathomed, ultra conservative and consequently it is appears almost impossible to get anything of vision built. When I have had the temerity to ask WHY? I've been told, usually with some passion, that just because other people and places do these things, we don't have to.

It goes with the no "Winebar" mentality (see an earlier Grizzle). A friend of mine made the unsolicited comment that it seems, we do not really want tourists to visit our beautiful city. I think they may be right.
