About Me

My photo
Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
An independent, working woman, I live in a riverside suburb close to both Fremantle and Perth. Having lived in Perth for over thirty years it's obvious that I love the place, though there are still things that irritate and make me squirm with embarrassment. Occasionally they will make an appearance; but generally speaking this is a pretty good place to live.

Dam

Mundaring Weir, Perth's most famous dam.
The construction fascinated the young, potential engineer

It supplies over 100 000 people around the metropolitan area and another 30 000 in the place it was originally constructed for....The Goldfields; some 600 kms inland.  It cost the brilliant engineer, C Y O'Connor, who was responsible for its construction, his life.

After much public criticism over cost blowouts and speculation on whether the amazing pipeline that was to carry the water would actually work, the now revered, O'Connor ended it all by shooting himself whilst riding his horse about twenty metres off the coast of Fremantle.

The dam is 30% full of rainwater - sounds good....no.....it's supplimented by desalinated water???

State of the Art engineering - for its day.
Pump Room 1 -  Three massive boilers like that above created the steam to move the water through the pipeline.
